Body Contouring Surgery – Operative Treatment Options for Excess Skin
Many women come to us after significant physical changes — following substantial weight loss, previous liposuction procedures, or pregnancy. Despite stable weight, healthy nutrition, and regular exercise, excess skin often does not fully retract.
This frequently results not only in an aesthetic imbalance, but also in an emotional one. The desire to feel at home in one’s own body again is deeply personal — and entirely understandable.
Body contouring procedures aim to remove excess skin in a targeted manner and restore harmonious proportions. In addition to aesthetic improvements, functional complaints such as skin irritation, restricted mobility, or muscular instability can also be alleviated.

When Is Body Contouring Surgery Indicated?
Surgical skin tightening may be considered in cases of:
- Significant excess skin after major weight loss or liposuction
- Lax abdominal wall following pregnancy
- Rectus diastasis (separation of the abdominal muscles)
- Chronic discomfort caused by large or ptotic breasts
- Skin irritation or movement restrictions of the upper arms or thighs
A stable body weight for at least six months prior to surgery is a prerequisite.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
An abdominoplasty is indicated in cases of excess skin and weakened abdominal musculature, particularly after pregnancy or major weight loss.
During the procedure, the following may be performed:
- Removal of excess skin and soft tissue
- Stabilization of the abdominal muscles in cases of rectus diastasis
- Definition of the abdominal contour
- Additional liposuction to remove residual fat deposits, if indicated
The goal is a functionally stable core and a proportionate silhouette with carefully planned, discreet scar placement.
Breast Reduction and Breast Lift
Very large or significantly ptotic breasts may lead to considerable physical discomfort, including:
- Back and neck pain
- Shoulder tension
- Pressure marks from bra straps
- Skin irritation within the inframammary fold
A breast reduction decreases weight and volume, while a breast lift reshapes and repositions the breast. Both procedures can relieve functional symptoms and restore balanced body proportions.
Arm Lift and Thigh Lift
Following significant weight loss or high-volume liposuction, excess skin often remains on the upper arms or thighs.
Possible symptoms include:
- Friction during walking
- Limitations in physical activity
- Recurrent skin inflammation within skin folds
Surgical tightening removes excess skin and improves limb contour. We routinely combine arm and thigh lifts with liposuction in the treatment area to optimize contour and tissue handling.

What Are the Medical and Aesthetic Goals of Body Contouring Surgery?
The objective of body contouring surgery is to achieve a balanced relationship between medical safety, functional improvement, and a natural aesthetic result.
Central elements include precise surgical planning, tissue-preserving techniques, and individualized adaptation to your anatomical conditions.

Abdominoplasty
During an abdominoplasty, excess skin is removed and the abdominal wall is reshaped. If indicated, complementary liposuction can further refine the contours.
In cases of rectus diastasis, muscular repair can be performed during the same procedure. This strengthens the core functionally and defines the abdominal contour.
Scar placement is carefully planned to remain as discreet as possible within the bikini line.
Breast Reduction and Breast Lift
During breast reduction or mastopexy, excess tissue is removed and the breast is reshaped. The nipple-areola complex is gently repositioned to a natural, proportionate height.
A specialized internal tissue stabilization technique provides long-term structural support — comparable to an “internal supportive bra” — without the use of foreign materials.
The goal is the restoration of balanced proportions combined with functional relief.
Arm and Thigh Lift
On the upper arms and thighs, excess skin is removed and the contour is redefined.
The combination with gentle liposuction allows for tissue-preserving mobilization, reduces postoperative swelling, and supports a harmonious healing process.
Scar placement is planned individually and positioned as discreetly as possible.
For all procedures, the principle remains the same:
The goal is not to change who you are, but to restore a natural, proportionate silhouette that feels functionally stable and harmonious.
The decision for body contouring surgery is always based on comprehensive consultation and a realistic assessment of medical possibilities.
How Is the Procedure Performed?
All body contouring procedures are performed under general anesthesia. For your safety and optimal medical care, you will stay one night in our clinic for inpatient monitoring.
The postoperative phase is crucial for achieving a stable and aesthetically natural result. For the first six weeks, sports and strenuous physical activity should be avoided.
Depending on the procedure, you will wear a compression garment, supportive bra, compression bolero, or compression garment for the lower body. These support healing, reduce swelling, and stabilize the newly contoured tissues.
We use fully absorbable sutures, so no stitch removal is necessary.
Especially during the first few days, conscious physical rest is essential — your body is in an intensive regenerative phase.

Fragen vor der Operation
1. What happens on the day of surgery?
On the day of your surgery, please arrive on time and fasting at the scheduled hour.
After your arrival, all administrative formalities will be completed, and your documents reviewed.
You will then have a final consultation with your surgeon. During this appointment, the surgical area will be examined again and carefully marked. Medical photographs will also be taken for documentation purposes.
Afterwards, you will meet the anesthesia team to clarify any remaining questions regarding the anesthesia. An intravenous line will then be placed, and you will be accompanied to the operating room — where you will gently fall asleep.
During the first 24 hours after surgery, we recommend limited bed rest. Mobilization should be restricted to short walks within your room and bathroom visits only.
In the evening, you will receive your first thrombosis injection before spending the night in a quiet private room at our clinic.
The following morning, you will enjoy breakfast, have a medical check-up, and — if everything is progressing well — you may leave the clinic accompanied by a responsible adult.
Throughout your entire stay, we are by your side — with experience, care, and an open ear.
2. Is the procedure always performed under general anesthesia?
Yes. At LiSuMed, the procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia.
This ensures maximum safety and comfort throughout the entire surgery.
3. How long does the surgery take and can it be performed on an outpatient basis?
The surgery usually takes approximately two to three hours.
At LiSuMed, we routinely perform the procedure with an overnight stay for careful monitoring — in the interest of maximum safety and optimal postoperative care.
Smaller procedures may, in selected exceptional cases, be performed on an outpatient basis.
4. How long do I need to wear compression garments after surgery?
We recommend wearing your compression garment consistently, day and night, for the first six weeks after surgery.
5. Do I need lymphatic drainage after surgery?
Yes, manual lymphatic drainage is generally highly beneficial after surgery.
It can usually begin as early as the second postoperative day and should ideally be performed twice weekly for four to six weeks.
This gentle treatment supports the reduction of swelling and promotes harmonious healing.
6. Do the sutures need to be removed?
We exclusively use absorbable sutures, so there is no need for suture removal later on.
7. What complications may occur after surgery?
All potential risks and complications will be discussed with you in detail during your individual medical consultation.
We carefully consider your personal situation and answer all your questions thoroughly.
8. When can I get up on the day of surgery?
As soon as you are awake and circulatorily stable, you may get up.
However, on the day of surgery, mobilization should be limited to short walks within your room and bathroom visits.
9. I have a long journey home — is that a problem?
For patients undergoing body contouring surgery, we recommend remaining in Germany for at least five days after the procedure.
During this sensitive early healing phase, close medical supervision is particularly valuable.
This allows us to personally monitor your recovery and ensure optimal postoperative care.
10. I have a problem after surgery — who can help me?
After surgery, Mr. Bugariu, Dr. Majewski, Dr. Sollmann, and the LiSuMed team are available to you via a dedicated emergency mobile phone 24/7.
This ensures that you always have a competent contact person — even outside regular consultation hours.
11. When can I resume sports after surgery?
You should refrain from sports activities during the first six weeks after surgery.
Light walks are usually possible two to three days after the procedure.
Moderate activities such as swimming or cycling may, in selected cases and after prior consultation with us, be resumed from the third postoperative week onward.
Full, unrestricted physical activity is generally possible after six weeks.
12. How should I care for my scars and when should I begin scar treatment?
Scar massage is an important step toward achieving a soft and cosmetically inconspicuous scar.
You may begin scar massage approximately 14 days after surgery — provided that the wound is fully closed and free of irritation.
We recommend performing the massage twice daily for about five minutes each time, ideally for up to six months after surgery.
The massage should be performed with moderate pressure, using either your fingertip or a scar roller. Suitable care products include silicone-based preparations or a neutral oil such as baby oil.
Additionally, silicone sheets can further support optimal scar healing.
13. I have pre-existing medical conditions — can I still undergo surgery?
If you have pre-existing medical conditions, an individual consultation is particularly important.
Together, we carefully assess the surgical risk and make a well-considered decision.
You are welcome to send us your medical records in advance. This allows us to evaluate whether surgery is generally possible at our clinic or whether additional examinations are required.
